July 2007 Newsletter!
We just returned from a trip to the Gilmore Museum...
Many shooters also appreciate old cars so I want to take just a moment to mention what I think is one of the world's finest car museums. Located midway between Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Battle Creek, MI and just 15 minutes from I-94 and US-131, they tell it best: "Dreams of finding an “old car in a barn” are a daily reality here. Nestled on 90 landscaped acres in restored historic barns are nearly 200 extraordinary vehicles spanning more than 100 years of automotive heritage. Here you will find exhibits ranging from a 1899 Locomobile, to the classic Duesenberg or the elusive Tucker '48, and from the Model T to the muscle cars of the 60s and 70s." But the best part is the barns. There are a half dozen of the most extraordinary structures you have ever seen- worth the trip alone, but the cars are the real treat. Also, at a time when many museums are being "dumbed down" to the level of the slowest second grader, the Gilmore is standing strong. Check out their website: http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/
Thanks to Stuart Mowbray for reviewing our reprint of "A Basic Manual of Military Small Arms", 1945 by WEB Smith in this month's Man at Arms for the Gun Collector NRA magazine.
In an effort to perk up lagging summer sales, I processed quite a few catalogs in June, over 30 in fact. By the way, now is the time, when we are slow, to tell me if there are any books from the Coming Soon list you would like me to process for you.
As I mentioned in my note last week I am using a new Newsletter mailing program. I think it is sorted out now and we should be good to go. In the intrim I was able to add a few more catalogs that do not yet have webpages. The list can be seen at the Recent Additions page.
Thanks to Doug Elliott and Rudy Prusok I was able to add two more Ideal catalogs to the 30 or so we already reprint. They were the Ideal #6 from 1895 and the Ideal #12 from 1900.
I bought a beautiful Westley Richards c1934 Rifles and Ammunition catalog and with 74 pages is one of the nicest WRs we carry. In 1956 Hy Hunter was selling 33 pound Boy's Anti-Tank Rifles for a mere $75. We did his Dewat machine gun catalog from 1957 last month. See the Carl Gustaf (Sweden) SMG Manual too.
Don't miss the Abercrombie & Fitch 1940 catalog. They had absorbed the VonLengerke company by then and were selling Francotte, Purdey, Woodward, Holland & Holland, Parker, Fox, Mannlicher Schoenauer, Sedgeley, Greifelt and a host of others.
Hand in Hand with the 1931 Browning Shotgun catalog we have had available for a while is our new 1931 Browning catalog introducing the "new Superposed shotgun". It was made from a beautiful original loaned to us by Al Carleton and is printed in color. The Browning Company also wrote a 61 page History of Browning Guns in 1942.
Don't miss, thanks to Mike Carrick, "Bullets by the Billions", the story of the Evansville, Indiana Chrysler plant that, during WWII, made enough .45 acp ammo to stretch three times around the world. A really neat story illustrated in color.
Mark Foster loaned us a copy of the Cogswell and Harrison Bicentenary 1770-1970 catalog/book. The section on Pepperboxes and Percussion Revolvers is particularly interesting as are sections on Big Game and the manufacturing process.
We bought an original Davenport 1930 and a beautiful Purdey 1969 catalog. Martin Keene fixed us up with a Holland & Holland c1910-12.
Trying to keep up the ammunition and reloading catalogs seems endless sometimes but we were able to process the DWM, 1937 and Dornheim, 1933 catalogs that came from Rudi Prusok along with the RWS catalogs from 1922 and RWS 1939... whew! Oh yes and an Eley Ammunition (UK) from 1910-11. Thanks to John Pople-Crump in the UK for his help correcting an error in an earlier Eley.
We added William Goforth's comprehensive Iver Johnson 1871-1993 book to our resale list. and a couple more High Standard catalogs from 1960 and 1968.
Jesse "Wolf" Hardin who, we understand, is descended from desperado and lawyer John Wesley Hardin, sent me a copy of his latest of four published books. This one is called Old Guns and Whispering Ghosts, Tales and Twists of the Old West, published by Shoot Magazine Co, 7154 West State Street, Boise, ID 83714, tel. 1-800-342-0904. This beautifully illustrated color books will captivate you for hours.
Nick Niles came through with a pile of Savage/Stevens/Springfield/Crescent-Davis catalogs from the 20s to 50s. Check out:

Mike Carrick also found a couple of nifty old Smith and Wesson catalogs. One is for the S&W "Projectile Launching Gun" of 1968 and the other is the S&W 1969 9mm Sub Machine Gun.
Finally, we made a 1962 Webley Air & Garden Guns catalog as well as the owner's manual for a Williams & Powell Shootgun and Rifle manual from about 1890 (this will no doubt be a hot seller to all you Williams and Powell collectors out there!) Actually there are a few more on the Recent Additions page but I haven't added web pages for them yet.
INDEXES for Every Catalog...
Every catalog we offer has an index at the bottom of the page. This is true of listings on our website, Ebay, Gunbroker and Auction Arms (we greatly prefer you buy them at the website though, where we don't have to pay listing fees or sales commissions... shipping is cheaper too!)
The new brochure has received some compliments from those who appreciate the breakdowns of the things we reprint. Once again, there are sections for:
(let me know if you want one or more)
- U.S. Manufacturers
- British, Canadian & Commonwealth
- Ammunition, Reloading, Sights and Telescopes.
If you haven't yet done so, please read the About Us link on the website. It explains a lot of things such as why graphics vary in books, why I do this in the first place, errors and mistakes, guarantees, loans and more. Also, if you see something in the Coming Soon page you want, let me know and I'll move it up the list for you.
We are still getting some resistence to using Paypal by those who believe Paypal still discriminates against gun collectors and owners. They modified their policy earlier this year:
Reprinted from Paypal:
You may not use PayPal in the purchase or sale of firearms or ammunition unless the seller has received prior approval from PayPal. PayPal reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to permit its payment services to be used for the legal purchase and sale of certain firearms and ammunition regulated by this policy. Approval to use PayPal for the sale of certain firearms or ammunition will only be permitted after a thorough review of the procedures and controls the seller has in place in order to ensure transactions and shipments are conducted in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
If you or your business requires approval to engage in the sale of firearms or ammunition in accordance with this policy, please send your contact information and a brief summary of your business to: email@example.com ."
For Book Authors Out There:
Our latest authored book is William Goforth's Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works Firearms 1871-1993. 224 pages, about 8.5” X 11”, glossy soft-cover in full color. New book, copyright 2006. Printed on high quality 24# 97 bright acid free paper, perfect bound. Fully Illustrated. We won't challenge Borders for top spot as a book seller but we are selling them so if you have a book (especially self-published books) that you think will fit in with my listings please give me a call at 810-225-3075.
As usual, the recent addition links are below.
