This Volume II reprint of the famous series by premier 19 th century firearms antiquarian Charles W. Sawyer covers the evolution of revolvers from the early nineteenth century through the beginning of the 20 th century. Vol. II Firearms in American History- The Revolver 1800 to 1911 was first published by The Arms Company and printed at the press of George H. Ellis Co. in Boston , MA in 1911. The Sawyer collection was one of the pioneer antique arms collections, and this book describes the evolution of revolving pistols- matchlock, flintlock, percussion, and cartridge types spanning several centuries but mainly the nineteenth century. Illustrated and described. Book lists the evolution of patents and manufacturers. Sawyer is a wonderful, entertaining writer. He includes in this volume a lengthy discussion of Colt and his firearms as well as a delightful chapter about sportsmen and their guns. Soft cover bound book, 5 ½ inches by 8 ½ inches, Fully Illustrated, 88pp. (Not abridged- even the ads are included) Re-set in modern type. This book is a must have for any weapon collector!

Assigned his English patent of November 7, 1857, to Thomas Poultney of Baltimore , Maryland , November 6, 1860...

Peculiarities. The Adams double-action revolver.

 

ADAMS, ROBERT-LONDON , ENGLAND

May 3, 1853

Peculiarities. -Raising the hammer and revolving the cylinder by the usual movement of the trigger. This revolver, as made by Deane Adams & Deane, was a 5-shooter; the cylinder pin could be drawn wholly or partially out, forward; the ratchet, fastened on the rear of the cylinder by two screws, could be removed; a stop on the left side of the frame could hold the hammer slightly raised in order to revolve the cylinder to load; bullets, seated by finger pressure, were cast with a small tang on which a wad was fixed.

 

ALLEN, ETHAN-GRAFTON , MASSACHUSETTS

November 11, 1837

Peculiarities. -Firearm lock of new design for raising and releasing the hammer by movement of the trigger; hammer without thumb-piece. First applied to "Pocket Rifles," then to pepperboxes, then to revolvers.

Peculiarities. -Trigger-guard lever with geared teeth acting on a rammer.

Peculiarities. - In connection with the cylinder pin a surface formed in front of the cylinder to deflect upward the escaping gas.

 

November 9, 1858

Peculiarities. -Internal lock improvements in a rim-fire metallic cartridge revolver having the hammer on the right side of the frame. July 3, 1860
